Registered Nurse – PCU (Progressive Care Unit)

 

Facility: Cone Health – Alamance Regional Medical Center
Location: 1240 Huffman Mill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215
Start Date: July 22, 2025
Contract Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Night – 3 × 12‑hour shifts (19:00–07:00)
Unit: Cardiac Medical PCU (Unit 2A – 91140)

Job Overview

Care for up to 30 intermediate-acuity cardiac patients (CHF, ACS, dysrhythmias, post-cath, pacemaker placements) who require advanced monitoring (e.g., telemetry, drips, CPAP/BiPAP). The team uses a self-scheduled model via Optilink to balance acuity and patient needs. Night shift provides every-night coverage with floating within the Progressive Care unit as needed.

Minimum Requirements
  • Experience: ≥2 years in step-down/PCU or equivalent
  • Certifications/Licensure: RN license (MD/compact), BLS, ACLS; NIHSS preferred
  • Residency: Must reside ≥50 miles from hospital
Core Responsibilities & Clinical Skills

Telemetry & Cardiac Monitoring

  • Collaborate with remote monitoring teams and intervene on alerts promptly

Medication & Infusion Management

  • Administer and titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips (non-titratable protocols)
  • Set up/manage IVs, PICC lines, and blood products

Respiratory & Interventional Support

  • Manage Emerson/Pleur‑evac chest tubes and tracheostomy care
  • Monitor CPAP/BiPAP therapy for respiratory compromise

Patient Assessment & Procedural Support

  • Provide pre-/post-cardiac cath care and peripheral line maintenance
  • Support bedside procedures with sterile technique and accurate documentation reddit.com

Education & Team Collaboration

  • Educate patients/families on discharge plans, medications, and cardiac care

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 on typical shifts (may drop to 1:4 with drips/BiPAP)
  • Beds: 30 private telemetry-monitored rooms
  • Scheduling: Self-managed every 6 weeks; weekend coverage included
  • Floating: Occasionally float to other PCU/step-down areas
