Job Description

Berkeley Lab is looking for several accomplished Senior Accelerator or Beamline Mechanical Engineers with significant experience designing, developing, analyzing, and building major technical sub-systems for particle accelerators, light source beamlines, or similarly complex scientific equipment. We look for all-in and hands-on engineers who can fluently transition between detailed CAD or analysis work, engineering research and development, and all the way to project management and fabrication, vendor, and installation oversight. These positions require intimate knowledge of manufacturing and quality assurance approaches as are necessary for large-scale complex construction projects. We look for determined and proactive leaders who can independently engineer systems but are also skilled in team building and delegating work to stay on schedule.

The individual positions will report to subsystem technical leads and will be responsible for management, design, engineering, integration, and delivery of individual accelerator mechanical engineering systems within the ALS-U Project , an upgrade for the Advanced Light Source (ALS), a prominent National User Facility. We seek senior engineers for each of the following major subsystems:

  • Accelerator Magnets
  • Accelerator Vacuum
  • Accelerator Supports
  • Accelerator Raft Integration and Assembly
  • Accelerator Electrical Cabling and Integration
  • Accelerator Installation
  • Other Accelerator Components, e.g. RF systems, instrumentation, or high-voltage mechanical systems
  • Light Source Front Ends and Beamlines
  • Light Source Endstations

You will be responsible for developing system requirements and interfaces and delivering the systems scope of work within those established requirements. Lead engineers need to possess broad knowledge regarding engineering design, engineering CAD modeling, analysis, and also manufacturing planning, but may be specialized in one or more of these areas. This is a unique chance to work with highly advanced technologies and contribute to enabling world-class research. The ALS-U project is currently completing its final designs and transitioning into actual construction and installation. Therefore, the positions are rewarding for someone looking to contribute immediately and significantly to a leading scientific institution and shape the future of accelerator science and engineering. Join us and be part of this groundbreaking journey!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a responsible engineer for key mechanical designs for the above-mentioned ALS-U subsystems
  • Reporting to the subsystem technical lead, act as a primary mechanical stakeholder for one of the above-mentioned ALS-U subsystems.
  • Ensure that engineering designs are performant and act as a driving force to ensure overall designs are manufacturable and well prototyped. Ensure system fabrication is actively managed within the ALS-U quality assurance program and that production and construction roadblocks are immediately alleviated.
  • Apply practical experiences and a strong understanding of fundamental engineering concepts to drive design decisions as issues arise during construction.
  • Perform mechanical design and analysis, develop manufacturing drawings, test plans, and concept of operations, and follow hardware through the entire design, prototyping, and fabrication process.
  • Ensure engineering analysis and designs are fully documented and released into the LBNL document control system.
  • Collaborate with fabricators and technicians to improve designs, develop processes, and resolve issues.

What is Required:

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) or equivalent experience in Physics, Engineering, or a related field with 15+ years of experience and deep knowledge of particle accelerators, beamlines, detectors, or similar large-scale scientific or industrial installations.
  • Proven technical leadership with the ability to provide clear direction, inspire confidence, and guide technical teams towards achieving project goals. This includes setting technical vision, fostering collaboration, and driving decision-making. A hands-on attitude is fundamental, and expert knowledge of CAD and finite element design is absolutely needed (preferably Creo Parametric and Ansys).
  • A strong understanding of accelerator systems or similar complex, large-scale scientific or engineering projects. This includes familiarity with such systems technical challenges, design considerations, and operational aspects.
  • Deep understanding of system-level thinking and the ability to ensure seamless integration of various technical subsystems and components. This includes defining and managing interfaces, resolving integration challenges, and providing overall system functionality.
  • Ability to provide strategic technical guidance, review and approve technical designs, and make sound engineering decisions that align with project requirements and standards.
  • Proven ability to effectively engage and manage relationships with various stakeholders. This includes clear communication of technical and project information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to provide clear and concise status updates, reports on technical performance, schedule, and budget, and to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) or equivalent experience in Physics, Engineering, or a related field with 20+ years of experience and deep knowledge of particle accelerators, beamlines, detectors, or similar large-scale scientific or industrial installations.
  • Expertise in systems engineering, QA, and Project Lifecycle Management. Experience with DOE 413.3B projects.
  • Proven ability to manage project phases, timelines, budgets, and resources effectively. This encompasses planning, scheduling, tracking progress, and ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery.
  • Strong reputation and network within the national and international scientific community in particle accelerators, beamlines, detectors, or large-scale scientific projects.

Required Application Materials:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Cover letter
  • Publication list
  • Statement of professional experience and interests

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • For candidates with a significant publication record and exposure to the international field of large-scale scientific construction projects, this position is expected to pay $169,000.00 $237,000.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $126,874.00 $304,509.00 for a Staff Sci/Engr position. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and will be aligned with internal peers.
  • For candidates with a limited publication record and limited exposure to the international field of large-scale scientific construction projects, this position is expected to pay $157,000.00 $192,000.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $139,752.00 $235,848.00 for an Engineer 4 position. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and will be aligned with internal peers.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. This is not a remote position. Starting May 7, a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here ).
