Performs phlebotomy functions and non–technical duties. Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick) according to established procedure of South Shore Hospital. Performs venipuncture using correct technique and with minimal discomfort to the patient. Performs fingerstick procedures with correct technique and when unable to obtain specimen by venipuncture. Performs heelstick on babies with correct technique. Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes by checking name and Hospital Medical Record number on patient armband and labeling all specimen tubes following established procedure. Uses Automated Patient Identification system for scanning and labeling. Determines priority of STAT draws and ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing. Utilizes computers for order entry, verifying information, and generating collection lists. Organizes assigned work and completes workload statistics. Helps co-workers and communicates with laboratory departments to ensure orderly workflow. Assists in training new employees and student interns. Follows all organizational and department policies and procedures. May act as receptionist in outpatient lab when required. Responsible for daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department. Records daily temperature of refrigerator and notifies supervisor if out of limits. Receptive to technological solutions. Fosters a culture of safety by adhering to safety procedures and using personal protective equipment. Job requirements include preferred equivalent of four years of high school education, one year of full-time experience preferred, and certification or eligibility with National Phlebotomy Association preferred. Work schedule includes Monday to Thursday 7:30 AM to 6 PM, one out of four weekend rotations, and one holiday annually. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from American Heart Association required.
