Job Description

Direct assistance is provided to the surgical team in the care of patients during the surgical procedure. Sterile instruments are handled during surgery and assistance is provided with various other pre-, intra-, and postoperative related tasks. Essential Duties & Responsibilities include preparing for assigned surgical procedures by consulting with team members to identify patient needs, utilizing physician preference cards to check case carts and obtain appropriate instruments, equipment, suture, and supplies, and preparing case set-up within an acceptable timeframe. The role requires scrubbing, gowning, and gloving according to procedure, maintaining strict aseptic technique, prioritizing and completing set-up according to accepted standards, conserving supplies and equipment, performing intraoperative scrub responsibilities, assisting with prepping and draping, maintaining an organized back table, anticipating surgical team needs, proper handling of instruments, focusing attention on the surgical procedure, communicating with the team, performing counts according to policy, promoting electro-surgical safety, giving thorough reports at shift changes, respecting patient privacy, and performing scrub roles for a variety of surgical procedures across multiple specialties including vascular, neuro, plastic/hand, gyn, ENT, ortho, GU, general, cardiothoracic, ophthalmology, and podiatry. Minimum qualifications include graduation from an Operating Room Technician Program or equivalent, one year of OR experience preferred, good interpersonal skills, and C.O.R.T. certification or eligibility. Physical requirements include walking and standing up to 90% of the time, ability to push/pull heavy weights and lift 50 pounds, exposure to anesthetic gases and patient fluids, use of power tools during surgery, and compliance with infection control and safety protocols.
