About CIVIC

Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) is an international nonprofit and nongovernmental organization with offices around the world working to improve protection for civilians in conflict zones. Our mission is to support communities affected by conflict in their quest for protection and work with armed actors and relevant institutions to strengthen their resolve and capacity to prevent and respond to civilian harm. We are advocates who believe that no civilian caught in conflict should be ignored, and advisors who provide practical solutions to preventing and responding to civilian harm. Learn more atciviliansinconflict.org.

About the Position

Are you passionate about making a global impact and eager to gain hands-on experience in the nonprofit world? Join the Development team at the Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) as an intern and be part of a mission-driven organization working to protect civilians caught in conflict zones around the world.

As a Development Intern, youll be at the forefront of efforts to grow support for CIVICs global programs. You will contribute to the development of persuasive grant proposals by helping craft narratives that clearly communicate the urgency and impact of our work to potential funders. Your research and writing will help lay the groundwork for new partnerships and sustained donor engagement. You will also assist in creating and refining donor communications materials that bring the realities of our fieldwork to life, connecting the protection needs of civilians with the resources and attention they deserve.

This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into the inner workings of an international nonprofit, contribute to meaningful projects, and build skills in research, writing, strategy, and donor engagement. If you're driven, detail-oriented, and excited to learn how compelling storytelling supports global change, this internship is for you.

This is an unpaid internship; however, a stipend will be provided. Academic credit arrangements can be made with your institution.

Commitment of at least 20 hours per week for a minimum of three months, ideally starting September 1, 2025 to December 19, 2025.

The internship is part-time, based in New York, and on a hybrid work schedule.

Key Functions

The intern will be integrated into the team and will support, among other tasks:

  • Assist with the development of grant proposals, including writing narratives, developing theories of change, articulating program activities, drafting logical frameworks, and copy-editing
  • Conduct rigorous desk research to produce accurate and up-to-date context statements
  • Support the development and implementation of fundraising strategies
  • Analyze calls for proposals and contribute to pre-positioning efforts
  • Edit proposals and communications materials for clarity and precision
  • Represent the team by attending conferences and policy meetings
  • Provide logistical and administrative support as needed

Requirements/Qualifications

Essential:

  • Current student (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills in English
  • Demonstrable interest in and knowledge of peacebuilding or international development
  • Self-starting, detail-oriented, and flexible approach to tasks
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail

Desirable:

  • Proficiency in additional languages
  • Experience working in a non-governmental organization or non-profit environment
  • Practical experience in program design
  • International experience

While the listed requirements have been beneficial for US interns in the past, we value diverse experiences and skills. If you are ready to learn and feel you would excel in this position despite not meeting all requirements, we encourage you to apply.

Applications will be accepted until Monday, August 11, 2025 at 4:00 PM EST.
